The mixer board is a gathering point and traffic cop for all the various sources of audio signals in the studio (CD players, MegaSeg, laptops, MICs). It "mixes" these signals and sends them either to the transmitter for broadcast or to the computer for recording. The sound coming from the headphones represents what is being broadcast.
The mix of sound you hear on the headphones is what’s being broadcast. The level of sound being broadcast is represented on the meters. The headphone volume is separately controlled by the small knob on the right of the mixer and/or the small headphone amplifier to the right of the board.
The yellow buttons along the bottom turn the channel off so that the signal goes nowhere
The red buttons along the bottom turn the channel ON so that the signal can be broadcast or recorded. The red button for the MegaSeg channel should always be on.
The sliders control the level of the signal. If the slider for a channel is all the way down, nothing will be recorded or broadcast for that channel – regardless of the positions of the buttons. They should normally all be down except the channel you want to be broadcast – default being MegaSeg?.
A PGM button for each channel enables it to be broadcast. They should normally all be on.
An AUD button for each channel enables it to be sent to the recorder for recording. They should normally all be on.
A TEL button for each channel enables it to be heard by callers on the phone. They should all be off unless you have a caller.
The CUE buttons enable the sound from that channel to be heard over the small speaker on the mixer board. CAUTION: it also removes the sound for that channel from the headphones. If you use them to hear sound from the small speaker, be sure to turn them off afterwards. They should all normally be off.
The INPUT buttons are not used and should not be illuminated.
There is a row of buttons along the right side of the board outlined together and called HDPN. These buttons control what is being sent to the headphones. Normally the PGM button should be illuminated (to hear what’s being broadcast).
The 2 meters on the left show the level of the signal being broadcast. Adjust levels so that the needles just enter the red occasionally, they should never be "pegging" the meter all the way to the right.
The 2 meters on the right show the level of the signal being sent to the recorder for recording. The recording levels are tied to the broadcasting levels. If your broadcasting levels are good, your recording levels are good.
NOTE: It’s important that when you leave the board looks like the photo below…
